Tips for Moving to a Warmer State

3/20/2024

Not everyone loves the frigid cold that befalls states like Alaska, Minnesota, and Vermont during the winter. So, they join the millions of people moving between states each year. A whopping 8.2 million people moved between states in 2023 alone. So, if you are one of the millions who want to ditch the winter coat for a warmer climate, keep reading to find out how to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Warm Is Not the Same Everywhere

If you are still deciding which warmer state to move to, remember that temperature has a different effect everywhere. Some states are hot without humidity, while others are very humid. Many states have average temperatures throughout the year. There are many factors to consider when deciding where to move to. If you want to enjoy the warmth throughout the year, move to Florida, where the summers are tropical and the winters mild. If you still want some of the winter cold but not so much of it, consider New Mexico, Arizona, or Louisiana.

The Cost of Living Can Differ Dramatically

Depending on where you move, the cost of living can impact your bank account. If you plan a permanent move, consider your new state’s average housing costs, property taxes, and everyday expenses. Some of the most expensive states include Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and California.

Finding a Lifestyle Match

You should also think about the type of lifestyle you prefer. Do you want to hit the shops every weekend or explore different beaches? Do you want a mountain or forest hike option nearby or just a lake view for your morning coffee break? It is crucial to consider all these factors before planning your move. Don’t let the great weather of a specific state overshadow everything else.

Planning Your Move

In addition to saving some money to pay for an increase in living and property costs, you must have enough cash flow for your move. If you are moving long-distance, you must hire a professional moving company to help you. You will also need the right packing supplies and a storage option if you have not found a place to live. Get quotes from several moving companies and compare the services. Choose the one that gives you the most value for your money, including insurance.

You can save some money when moving by only taking the items you need. You can also sell or give away unwanted items to lighten the moving load. If the combined weight of your items is below 2,000 pounds, your move will qualify as ‘small,' and you will save even more. Do not be shy to negotiate for the best price. Most moving companies will allow for some negotiation.

Packing for Warmer Weather

While choosing which items to take, you can probably leave the heavy winter wear behind. Instead, focus on packing lightweight clothing, especially if you are moving somewhere humid. A warmer state also means more rain, so pack a raincoat and comfortable sweaters for cool spells.

If you are used to blinding snow, getting used to sparkling sunshine may take some time. However, pack plenty of sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses before soaking the rays. Moreover, if you are moving to the beach, add a couple of long-sleeved cotton shirts for extra protection against the sun.

You can also leave your winter bedding and curtains behind (in most cases). Moving to a hot state means sleeping under breathable fabric bedding and swapping curtains for blinds. Remember to check whether your new home has an air conditioner.

Settling Into a New State

If you have yet to find a permanent home in your new state, you will likely need temporary housing. Short-term rentals may be an option, or you can try an extended-stay hotel. This will give you enough time to search for the perfect house or condo. It will also allow you to acclimate to your new surroundings.

Once you have found your forever home, inform your insurance provider and relevant authorities about your address change. You will also need to update your driver’s license and voter registration.

Enjoying Your New State

Other things to consider when moving to a new state include vehicle maintenance for a warmer climate and preparing for potential natural disasters such as hurricanes. If you are taking your pets, you must check pet regulations, including microchips and vaccinations.

By planning, getting all the information you need, and packing only the essentials, you will quickly adapt to your new life. So, embrace this new adventure, and most of all, enjoy the sunshine!
