Driving a car is an essential part of our lives. We spend thousands of hours at the wheel. Day after day, we sharpen our driving skills. It seems it’ll go on forever. Yet, things change as you get older. The seniors aren’t so good drivers as they would be. The level of concentration decreases. The sharpness of eyesight worsens. The reaction rate deteriorates.
Still, you don’t have to give up the driving pleasure. The following tips will help you to make the driving process safe and comfortable even at the age of 70+.

#1. Health Condition Is of Primary Importance

You will never get the driving license unless you pass the medical test. The rules demand to take a medical examination every five years after 70. you have to renew it when you turn 75. In older age, however, it’s recommended to visit your physician at least once a year. The following aspects should be examined:
  • the blood pressure;
  • the condition of eyesight;
  • the mental ability to control the vehicle is in focus, too.
In fact, the lives of many people depend upon the condition of your health. An unexpected heart attack often leads to accidents. One more point is important. According to statistics, accidents with seniors often have fatal results. If you feel bad, don’t use a vehicle. If the doctor says to wear glasses, you must do it.

#2. Insurance Is a Must-Have

Life insurance is one of the most important things to have. It gives financial help in the case of a mishap. When it comes to drivers, car insurance is of primary importance. As a matter of fact, the seniors are accident-prone. The older people suffer grave injuries and more fatalities than younger people. The price of car insurance for older drives is more expensive in comparison with insurance for middle-aged ones.
The car insurance coverage differs from region to region. The most common points include:
  • damage and injuries you cause others in accidents;
  • your own medical costs;
  • collision payment;
  • payments in case your car is stolen or damaged by anything other than car
  • accidents.
There are many extra options. They may include rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, and full glass coverage. Car insurance is a perfect way to avoid unexpected expenses.

#3. Being at the Wheel

There is a list of items that always should be present in the car of seniors:
  • first aid kit. The pain-killers or antibiotics, adhesive tape, and band-aids are able to save your life. If you have serious trouble with your health, you should keep the necessary medicines at hand;
  • documents with contact information of your relatives or friends;
  • emergency mobile phone;
  • chargers;
  • the warm clothes and blankets;
  • some snack and water;
  • batteries and flashlight.
You should keep in mind that long-distance driving isn’t a good idea for seniors. If you have to span distant ground, it’s better to travel with a company.

So, driving when you are a person in years is a reality. You have only to be careful and follow certain rules.
