Older Americans are often interested in cruises that cater to their age group. Some are concerned that shore excursions will not be too strenuous and others feel it is important to have a physician on board with proper medical facilities. Most are interested in traveling with people their own age and some have expressed the desire that the ship not have a great many children on board. To accomplish this medium to smaller ships are often chosen and an added advantage to this size ship is there is not as much traveling between decks to reach various activities and recreational, educational and entertainment areas and facilities.

What do seniors look for in a cruise?
  • The right itinerary
  • The right ship
  • The right shore excursions
  • Senior Friendly
  • Programs like art classes, guest lecturers, computer seminars, bridge, etc.

Cruise Ships and Calling Home – What Are Your Options?

One of the more common questions that comes up is about phone calls: how will you make and receive phone calls at-sea? And how much will it cost?

There is a range of choices. For some cruises, phone coverage ends once you pass out of cell-range a few nautical miles off-shore.  Others provide their own cell-coverage and plans for mobile phone users on-board via the ship’s VSAT satellite connection. And others have “state room” phones that passengers can access from various locations on board. Depending on the cruise line, the specific ship you are taking, the countries you visit, and your own service provider, the options available vary, as do the costs and the dependability. The price range is wide, with per-minute rates starting at about US $2.00 to $10.00 per-minute for phone calls at sea.

To navigate your choices, here’s how you start:

Call your cruise line. Ask them if cell phone service will be available on your cruise, (specifically on the ship you will take), and what the charges will be. Also ask them what your other options are for making and receiving phone calls, such as “state room calling”

Call your own mobile phone service provider. Ask them if they offer a cruise-ship package. If they do, there is typically an upfront fee, but it’s a good way to lock in lower per-minute charges closer to the US$ 2.00 per minute range. Not all service providers offer you packages, but it’s worth looking into.

Renting a satellite phone is sometimes the best choice as this enables you to take full control of your own service, and establish stable pricing wherever you go and, in many cases, the per-minute charges are actually lower than your cheapest ship-based options (satellite calls range from US $1.00 to $1.95 per minute) depending on the rental package and provider you choose. There is typically a baseline rental fee for the leasing phone itself, ranging from $60 to $75 per week, so you should calculate that into your plans. You may find that your costs are lower than the ship-based options offered by your cruise line, and you may like the sense of control and peace-of-mind that comes with a satellite phone: many travelers choose a satellite phone because they know they can always get in touch, at a predictable cost, no matter where their journeys take them.
