High Blood Pressure

According to the American Heart Association high blood pressure generally has no symptoms except sometimes at emergency levels.

Some of the symptoms that might be visible are:

  • Chest pain
  • Confusion
  • Ear noise or buzzing
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Nosebleed
  • Tiredness
  • Vision changes
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Blurred vision

 

If you have a severe headache or any of the symptoms above, see your doctor right away. These may be signs of a complication or dangerously high blood pressure called malignant hypertension.

If you are experience symptoms this may be a good thing as they will alert you to a high blood pressure problem you may not be aware of.

If you have any type of high blood pressure, your doctor may recommend routine tests, such as a urine test (urinalysis), blood tests and an electrocardiogram (ECG) — a test that measures your heart's electrical activity. Your doctor may also recommend additional tests, such as a cholesterol test, to check for more signs of heart disease.

Prevention of High Blood Pressure

  • Excess weight adds to strain on the heart. Lose weight if you are overweight.
  • Exercise regularly. If possible, exercise for 30 minutes on most days.
  • Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products.
  • Reduce total and saturated fat intake.
  • Avoid smoking. If you smoke-stop. If you do not smoke don't start.
  • If you have diabetes, maintain proper blood sugar levels.
  • Cut your alchohol consumption to 1 or 2 alcoholic drinks per day.

Treatment of High Blood Pressure

Medicines that can be used to treat high blood pressure:

  • Alpha blockers
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
  • Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)
  • Beta-blockers
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Central alpha agonists
  • Diuretics
  • Renin inhibitors, including aliskiren (Tekturna)
  • Vasodilators
As a general rule you should exercise, lose weight, and follow a healthier diet.
