Stages of Prostate Cancer

The tumor stage describes where prostate cancer is located.  It can be confined inside the prostate, or it may have spread into the surrounding tissues or to other organs, most commonly the lymph nodes and bones.  The tumor stage is one factor used to determine the choice of therapy.

Stage I:   Cancer is not detectable on a physical exam and is confined inside the prostate.
Stage II:   Cancer is detectable on a physical exam but still confined to the prostate.
Stage III:   Cancer has spread outside the prostate into the surrounding tissues or nearby seminal vesicles.
Stage IV:   Cancer has spread to lymph nodes, bones or other organs.

Survival Rates of Prostate Cancer

Improvements in treatment have resulted in a reduction in the number of men dying from this disease.  The good news about prostate cancer is that it usually grows slowly and 9 out of 10 cases are found in the early stages.
